10 Ways to Embrace Winter in the US (plus extras!)

Happy New Year, IFI family ~

I hope you’ve been keeping warm during this winter season– if you’re in a colder state in the US, that is. But more than just keeping warm, I hope you’ve been creative in finding ways to enjoy it!

For many international students, including my Brazilian self, winter in the United States can be an exciting but challenging season, especially if you’re from a country with mild or tropical climates. I remember how daunting it felt to think about freezing temperatures, snow storms, and shorter days. However, experiencing a “true” winter opened my eyes to unique opportunities, as well as taught me valuable lessons I wouldn’t have learned if I hadn’t come to Ohio.

In an effort to convince you that this season isn’t so bad after all, here are some winter activities and tips to try, both outdoors and indoors. 😉👇

1. Snowboarding and Skiing ⛷️

The U.S. is home to world-class ski resorts, offering lessons for beginners. Some destinations include Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Vermont’s slopes, or local ski areas near your university.

2. Ice Skating ⛸️

Many cities build outdoor ice rinks during the winter months, creating a magical experience. Check your downtown area or even indoor rinks for a moment to glide!

3. Sledding and Snow Tubing 🛷

Grab a sled or tube and head to a nearby hill. It’s an inexpensive, exhilarating way to enjoy the snow—and it’s beginner-friendly!

4. Winter Hiking 🏔️

Snow-covered trails offer breathtaking views. Rent snowshoes to make navigating snowy terrain easier and more fun.

5. Get Creative ☃️

If it snows in your area, take advantage of it when it’s fresh. Gather friends for a playful snowball fight or showcase your building skills with a snowman or snow fort. You can also easily make snow angels!

6. Hot Cocoa and Coffee Shops ☕

Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or a specialty latte at a local café. Many spots feature seasonal flavors like peppermint or eggnog– be adventurous and try something new!

7. Try Winter Recipes 🍲

Cooking or baking can be a great way to bond with others. Look up American classics and make them. Some examples are chili with cornbread, chowder, or gingerbread cookies!

8. Visit Museums and Indoor Attractions 🖼️

Take the colder months as an opportunity to explore local museums, aquariums, or historical landmarks.

9. Crafting and DIY Projects 🧶

Create winter-themed decorations, learn to knit a scarf, or take up painting to relax or challenge yourself.

10. Attend Sporting Events 🏒

Cheer on a local ice hockey or basketball team for an exciting, American experience.

Extra #1: Festive Season 🎄

  • Many towns and cities have elaborate light displays during December. Visit these to soak in the festive atmosphere!
  • Explore Christmas markets offering unique crafts, food, and cultural items. Popular cities for these include Chicago, Denver, and Washington, D.C.
  • Welcome the new year with outdoor events or fireworks displays. Iconic celebrations like Times Square in New York are world-famous, but smaller local events are equally enjoyable.
  • Look for ice carving contests, snow sculpture competitions, or winter parades in your community.

Extra #2: Let’s Talk Practical ❄️

  • Invest in warm, waterproof boots, a heavy coat, thermal layers, gloves, a scarf, and a hat.
  • Make sure to keep active and eat well, as sickness tends to spread more. Movement will also help with warmth and your overall mood. Lastly, it’s wise to check your vitamin D levels, especially if living in states that lack sunlight during the winter season.
  • Many universities organize trips or activities for international students, such as ski outings or ice-skating nights. Different IFI locations offer diverse winter events, so check our locations page to see if IFI is near you!

Why Embracing Winter Matters

Winter might be a new experience for you, but it’s a season full of opportunities to connect with others, learn new skills, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Don’t let the cold hold you back– embrace the season and make new memories!
